After hearing about Salsabeel's work on social media, Ahmed, a 35-year-old man from Fayoum contaced us to see if we could help him access treament for Pompe disease, a rare genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and breathing problems. He runs a small electronics shop and is trying to keep working and supporting his family, but his health has made that much harder.
It took Ahmed years to get the right diagnosis. He spent the savings he had on doctors, tests, genetic testing and treatment before finally finding out what was wrong. Fortunately, his treatment is covered, but he has to travel to Cairo every two weeks to receive it, and that is where he is struggling.
The trip from his small village near Fayoum to Cairo is extremely gruelling for him due to his condition. It includes a lot of walking, several connections and take more than two hours each way. The travel is exhausting, makes his symptoms worse and leaves him with less energy to work and help his family. He will need to keep making this trip every two weeks for the rest of his life.
Salsabeel is able to contribute $500 from our existing resources, and we are trying to raise the remaining $3000 to buy a basic used car for Ahmed that is reliable enough to get him to Cairo for treatment without putting his body through the same difficult trip on public transportation every two weeks.
Because this treatment is lifelong, a car is the most affordable long-term solution to avoid continuing to pay for transportation every two weeks. It would make it easier for Ahmed to keep up with his treatment, continue working at his shop and spend less of his limited energy simply trying to get to the hospital.
We would really like to help him make that possible.
