Help a Harvard student facing eviction
Donation protected
Members of HGSU are helping a Harvard student who is facing homelessness. After a fire in May, the student was forced to leave their Cambridge housing and temporarily stayed in Harvard Housing under an agreement with their landlord who promised to pay the rent while repairs were completed. However, in October, the student was evicted from that apartment and left with unpaid rent to Harvard Housing. Recently, Harvard made an agreement to cancel their housing debt which allowed them to graduate. However, as a part of this agreement, Harvard gave the student two day’s notice to move out of Harvard Housing, with no option of a place to stay or a source of income, leaving them homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also suffer from a chronic disability which makes them particularly vulnerable.
The city of Cambridge has dragged their feet in securing them emergency disability assistance through a section 8 housing voucher and has also retracted their EAEDC emergency disability supplement. Until the city reviews their section 8 voucher, the student will need help to maintain a place to live.
The student is in desperate need of funds to secure temporary housing that can accommodate their disability, and also funds to move and store their furniture and belongings.
In the interest of transparency, funds are specifically needed to cover the following needs:
Initial cost of movers following eviction (fronted by volunteers): $1600
Costs for a temporary airbnb (fronted by volunteers): $1180
Rent for three months in a sublet (until Cambridge secures them a section 8 allowance): $3900
Temporary Storage for furniture: $500
Movers fees: $1300
All funds will go directly to the Harvard student in distress and to reimburse expenses incurred by volunteers. No funds will be collected by HGSU.
Any amount that you could afford is greatly appreciated. If you or someone you know can provide mutual aid in the form of temporary, affordable housing or storage space, please contact the organizers.
