Help a Canadian Friend Save Feral Cats in Japan

My Canadian friend Marie is an English and Yoga teacher in Nagoya, Japan. Despite living on a very limited budget, she takes care of 6 of her own cats and 20+ stray (feral) cats on a daily basis. She needs the Japanese Yen equivalent of roughly US$ 500 per month for food alone, plus about US$ 250 for vet fees, also per month. The money is required for her daily feeding of the feral cats and to support her work of humanely trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and releasing (TNR). This financial burden on her is just enormous. We are therefore asking for support during the coming 6 months, starting from October 2023.

Japan is a country where TNR efforts are very limited, and it therefore has a run-away feral cat problem. My friend is doing her best to carry out TNR work around her neighborhood in a safe and effective way, all by herself, using her yellow scooter for transport (see photo with stray Japanese cat finding some left-over cat food).

TNR is an effective way to reduce feral cat populations and improve the lives of feral cats. Neutering prevents cats from reproducing, which slows the growth of the population over time. Ear-tipping is a painless procedure that helps to identify cats that have already been neutered, so they are not trapped again. Vaccinations and anti-flea medicine help to protect feral cats from diseases that can be harmful to both cats and humans.
