My name is Kyle Takman, loving son to Helen & Bryan Gelyk. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

On July 21st, 2026 at approximately 7:30pm, the unthinkable happened. A devastating fire broke out on Nelson Street West. The fire started in a neighbouring house on windy day and spread rapidly. Strong winds fueled the fire, and allowed the flames to spread between lots, ultimately engulfing both houses, and stripping two families of everything they own. While we are grateful that no one was physically injured, the emotional impact of losing a lifetime of memories, cherished family heirlooms, and suddenly finding yourself homeless is a pain that cuts deeper than any blade.

Many of you know Helen and Bryan through their decades of service to the communities of Meaford and Owen Sound. For more than 40 years, they have dedicated their lives to helping others.

Helen spent her career as a NICU nurse in Owen Sound, providing compassionate care to newborns and their families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Her kindness, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication touched countless families. She has always been the kind of person who makes time for others, even when there never seem to be enough hours in the day.

Bryan spent his career as a respected instructor at Georgian College and was deeply admired by his students. Anyone who knows him understands his patience, generosity, and genuine desire to help others succeed. He has always believed in lifting people up, encouraging them to reach their potential, and never leaving anyone behind.

After years of serving their community through their careers, they entered retirement only to continue giving back. Helen and Bryan are active members of Olivet Baptist Church and spend each summer volunteering at a children’s camp, where Helen serves as the camp nurse and Bryan as a camp counsellor. Their lives have always been defined by generosity, compassion, and service to others.

It is heartbreaking that two people who worked so hard and spent their lives giving so much to those around them have now lost everything.

Since the fire, many people have reached out asking how they can help. Your prayers, kind messages, and support have already meant more than words can express. For those who have asked if there is another way to support Helen and Bryan as they begin the long process of rebuilding, this page provides an opportunity to do so.

Helen and Bryan are resilient and optimistic. They will get through this ordeal, but there is no reason they should have to carry this burden alone. Please, help them shoulder the weight by lending some support so they don't have to worry about tomorrow, and can concentrate on healing, and reassembling the shattered pieces of their lives.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will help ease the financial burden of replacing essential belongings and beginning the long and painful process of rebuilding. If you are unable to give, sharing this page with others is another meaningful way to help.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, generosity, prayers, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
