Liams Story

7 months ago my younger brother had a brain haemorrhage. Liam is only 26. We were told he had a large aneurysm in the middle of his brain and the hard fact was that only 10% of people with that size aneurysm will be lucky enough reach the operating theatre.

Liam was in intensive care for many weeks which was an extremely anxious time for my family and his girlfriend. For so many weeks there was no change, we sat and waited by his side. We are so lucky and incredibly grateful that Liam is still with us.

Both my grandparents on my mum’s side had brain haemorrhages and now further investigations are taking place with myself and my mum.

7 months later my brother has defied all odds and has made great progress. He has learnt to eat again, to talk again and to walk again. He has been on such a long journey and my brother is my hero as he has tried so hard to get better.

With Liam’s discharge date from Walton complex rehab unit approaching we have been told the waiting lists for physio, speech and language and occupational health therapies is several months on the NHS.

Whilst Liam has made incredible progress, he still has a long road ahead. Due to the severity of his brain injury the main concerns are left sided weakness and a tremor in his left arm and hand. His career is a joiner and it is so important to him to be able to work again. He also has ataxic dysarthria effecting his speech and third nerve palsy in his right eye.

We have managed to find private therapies close to where we live which will help him but the cost of this is £85 per hour. Liam will need several therapies a week due to the complexity of his brain injury.

Many of our close family and friends keep asking us how they can help so we have decided to try to raise as much as we can to help Liam with therapies when he is discharged.

My brother deserves the best chance at recovery. He has built up such momentum and enthusiasm in rehab so let’s get Liam the recovery that he really deserves!

It has been overwhelming to receive all the love and support to Liam and my family. Thank you to each and everyone as it has been so appreciated along the way.
