Meet Lana Swancey! She is a 13 year old from South Carolina. She is the only child from South Carolina that has Canavan Disease. Canavan disease is an inherited disorder that causes progressive damage to nerve cells in the brain. This disease is one of a group of genetic disorders called leukodystrophies. Leukodystrophies are characterized by degeneration of myelin, which is the fatty covering that insulates nerve fibers. In 2002, Lana Swancey was the youngest child to undergo Gene Therapy. With a successful surgery, her progression of the disease was halted. She is now 13 years old and full of life! She loves reading and music.
