Help Owen Get His Seizure Alert Service Dog

Hi, my name is Michelle, and I’m fundraising for my 9-year-old son, Owen.

A few years ago, Owen suffered a serious head injury that changed our lives forever. What started as a scary accident has turned into a long and difficult journey of recovery. Since that injury, Owen has developed nocturnal seizures — seizures that happen while he’s asleep. These seizures are unpredictable and dangerous, and every night brings a new wave of worry and fear.

As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to know your child could be in danger while you sleep just a few feet away. We’ve spent countless nights watching over Owen, making sure he’s safe and trying to catch every seizure before it becomes serious. But even with our best efforts, we can’t be by his side every second.

Recently, Owen’s doctor recommended that he get a service dog specially trained to detect and respond to seizures. These incredible dogs can sense changes in a person’s body before or during a seizure and alert others that help is needed. A service dog would be able to wake us during the night if Owen has a seizure, provide comfort and protection during an episode, and even help Owen regain some of the independence that’s been taken from him.

For Owen, this dog wouldn’t just be a companion it would be a lifeline. The dog would help him feel safe enough to sleep in his own bed, give him confidence to go to school and play with friends, and allow him to do the things every 9-year-old should get to do without constant fear.

The cost of training and caring for a specialized seizure alert service dog is around $12,000. This includes professional training, certification, and the care and supplies needed to help the dog and Owen work together successfully. It’s a big goal, but we believe it’s possible with the help of our family, friends, and community.
