Hi there. My name is Roni and I’m a single mother to a 7-yr. old son, with special needs. I’ve been encouraged to start this page, reach out, and ask for help. I am needing to come up with $2800 to cover past-due rent (4 months @$600) and utility bills ($400), or I may face eviction. In our county, the housing authority has a 2 year waiting list, and the two low-income housing complexes, have an 8-month and a 12-month waiting list, respectively. If we lose our privately rented housing, my son and I will be homeless. If we move from our county I would have to start from scratch on getting him the various therapies that he needs, as well as the proper placement in school. This will set him back immensely as he doesn’t respond well to change.
Three years ago, when my son’s father decided to leave us, I was faced with figuring out how to support my autistic son and myself. Seeing that I didn’t have the proper skills to make a living wage, I returned to college full-time and worked hard to obtain my Associate’s Degree in Accounting. We survived on my grants while I was in school. When I graduated in December 2017, I felt ready to dive into a career and start making a real living wage. In my short-sightedness, I didn’t realize that my son’s school and therapy schedules would limit my work availability, which greatly limited my work search options.
For those that know autism, and specifically know me, you know how hard it is to juggle therapy schedules, my son’s needs, and a job. Although my son attends school, he also juggles 7 separate therapies (ST, OT, ABA x2, Feeding/Nutrition, Psychiatry, and Swimming) that he does outside his school schedule. Because of my son’s behavioral issues, I have not been able to find a daycare that will accept him, to care of him during after-school hours. In fact, he’s been asked to leave three separate facilities due to his behavioral issues. Not being able to find an appropriate after school care facility that can handle his behavioral issues, I am only available to work during the hours he is in school. I have been lucky enough to FINALLY find an employer that is willing to work with my limited availability. However, it has left me with a financial burden of $2800 that I owe in rent and utilities. Please help me secure my home again, and provide the stability my son needs to continue thriving and overcoming his challenges.
Although I’ve now found an employer willing to work with my limited schedule, and am on my way to getting back on my feet, I just need a little help to fill in the gap. Please keep us in your prayers that I continue to find the means to provide for me and my son, and thank you for taking a moment to read my story. Please feel free to share this.
