This is my sister Amanda. Most of you that know my sister know her for her generous spirit, her wicked sense of humor, her unerring ability to diagnose an emergency medical condition, and her calm hands and demeanor in medical trauma. She is far more than a nurse, friend and mother, who needs our help.
I call her Mandy, when we were small, I called her Danda. She couldn't pronounce Melissa, so she called me Danda also. I am fifteen months older than her. We dressed alike everywhere we went, until we were old enough to know better. When I went off to kindergarten, she eagerly awaited the day to join me at Memorial Elementary. Two years later Amanda arrived at Memorial, excited to begin her education. What happened next is every parent’s nightmare. Amanda was a victim of a serial child abuser, employed by the school district. No one ever knew. Twelve years after the abuse began, it was discovered. Her abuser spent barely any time behind bars. Yet her life sentence had just begun.
In January of 2020, thirty five years of harboring the trauma of the abuse she suffered, she disappeared. She was found twenty four hours later on a deserted road near the end of life. She expected no one to find her. My family will be forever grateful to the ranger that located her in time.
Fast forward six weeks. My sister self-admitted to a hospital in Tucson Arizona that specializes in the treatment of co-occurring traumatic disorders as well as the treatment of PTSD in first responders, as she is a trauma nurse. She is thriving in the treatment, and can finally see the light at the other end of the tunnel. However, she has been out of work since mid-January. Due to the severity of the trauma my sister experienced, the center in Tucson has recommended she continue her treatment in Dallas, the originators of the revisioning therapy she has been using. This means she will move yet again and insurance only helps so much, the rest is up to her.
Amanda is dedicated to her profession, to her patients and to her family. She is the first person to offer to help when hard times befall anyone. We are asking for your help to keep her treatment going and to help with the bills they will incur while in treatment and not working. If you cannot donate, please send happy, healing and encouraging thoughts her way! Our family thanks you on behalf of Amanda and her husband Matt in this difficult time.
