Georgie is a Yamaye Taino who carries the tradition of Canoe making. Due to a back injury he no longer fishes and has made a living from his carvings and craft work.
For the last 30 years Georgie has been living in pain and discomfort from his injury. Recently it's gotten worse and he urgently needs assistance for his medical expenses. We need to raise USD $1500 (AUD $2200).
About Georgie: Jeffett ‘Georgie’ Strachan (b.1954)
Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth
Born in the fishing community of Treasure Beach Georgie grew up helping his father carve traditional Jamaican canoes out of cotton trees. This is a boat-building technique passed down from Yamaye Taino ancestors. Over the years Georgie has developed his craft as a carver, using the skills he learnt from his father.
Georgie works with lignum vitae (wood of life), a high quality wood native to Jamaica. Nicknamed 'iron wood’ it is a labour intensive building material which requires a lot of time and energy to shape. With limited resources and tools, Georgie continues to use a completely hand-based practice of carving and whittling. Although Georgie carves a variety of objects, his life as a fisherman continues to inform a lot of his work.
Note from Ania Freer: I am a Jamaican/Australian creative filmmaker based in Jamaica. Over the past 4 years I have been working with Georgie, to help him exhibit and showcase his craft. During this time I have seen how Georgie's life and work have been effected by his back injury. He is now restricted to his bed, unable to carve and unable to sell his work. Together with Taino Chief, Kasike "Kalaan" Nibonrix Kaiman, I am asking for contributions to help cover Georgies' medical expenses.
Note from Kasike "Kalaan" Nibonrix Kaiman (Taino Chief): Georgie is a Yamaye Taino and keeper of our cultural heritage, his back injury has worsened and now he requires an MRI and medical treatment, we Yukayeke Yamaye Guani ask for your assistance and support for our brother and Elder, keeper of traditional ways so he may continue his craft and share with future generations.
Yayabo Buma (great spirit be with you).
