Fundraiser in memory of Gary McLean

Help us honor the life’s work and dedicated spirit of Gary McLean. Please support the two projects that he was passionate about in Nepal, the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital and the nursing scholarship program, by donating on this site.

Gary was a Vietnam veteran, a paramedic, firefighter and registered nurse. His passion was teaching and pursuing excellence in prehospital medicine. He spent innumerable hours teaching everything from basic first aid to EMT courses in Nepal.

Together with the Musa Masala team and Wilderness Medical Society , Gary supported the construction of the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital in Khamding, Nepal. The hospital will serve 30,000 people who are days away from the nearest healthcare facility. The hospital buildings are completed, but the funds are needed to cover operational costs.

Most recently, Gary was working with Musa Masala to help launch our new nursing scholarship program. Each year we will provide room and board and cover nursing school costs for a young local woman chosen by the Himalayan Yokpu Foundation , the Nepali nonprofit overseeing the hospital. This student will attain a nursing degree upon completion of the program. The difference this will make in that student's life and her family's is immeasurable.

We are deeply saddened at Gary’s passing. We need more people like him in this world. We are so honored Gary’s wife, Kim, asked us to open this fundraiser. We will do our best for her and will always keep Gary's lively spirit, compassion, and wisdom alive in our hearts as we continue to support the causes he was passionate about.
