Clara Lionel Foundation has been one of the most active foundations in supporting the global fight against the #COVID19 pandemic. Here's what they have done so far:
-CLF first donated $5 million to fight #COVID19 on March 21, sending the funds to on-ground organizations including Direct Relief, Feeding America, Partners in Health, The World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, and the International Rescue Committee
-The Foundation then sent $750,000 worth of ventilators to Barbados to make sure they're well prepared to handle an increase in the number of #COVID19 cases.
-On March 27, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo thanked Rihanna and CLF for donating much needed personal protective equipment, with the state being the hardest hit in the U.S.
-On March 31, CLF partnered with Jay Z's Shawn Carter Foundation and pledged $1 million each to support undocumented workers, the children of frontline healthworkers, first responders, incarcerated, and the elderly and homeless populations in NY and LA.
-On April 9, CLF announced a partnership with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donating $2.1 million each to Los Angeles to help provide 10 weeks of support for victims of domestic violence including shelter, meals, and counseling for individuals and their children.
-On April 14, CLF + Dorsey and Jay Z released $6.2 million in grants across 11 organizations to provide shelter, food and healthcare services to New Orleans, building testing capacity in Caribbean, and setting up ICUs, hospital beds and isolation units in sub-Saharan Africa.
History of Clara Lionel Foundation:
Rihanna launched the nonprofit organization Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012, in honor of her grandparents Clara & Lionel Braithwate. She started it when her grandmother Clara was sick after being diagnosed with cancer.
-CLF's projects include The Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados in 2012.
-Providing micro grants to primary and secondary schools in Barbados, scholarships to students from Caribbean and South America to pursue higher education in the U.S, and fund the training of secondary school graduates in Malawi to become HIV testers. The Foundation also supports girls’ secondary education in Malawi, aiming to support more than 7,500 girls by 2021. CLF donated thousands of bikes in 2018 to enable young girls in Malawi to travel long distances easier between home and school.
-Rihanna and CLF have also advocated for more funding to global education, partnering with Global Partnership for Education to pressure global leaders to help reach the goal of raising $3.1 billion for global education between 2018 and 2020.
-CLF was one of the first to mobilize help on the ground after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria donating a combined 735,000 emergency relief supplies reaching 300,000 people. They've also distributed grants in response to the earthquakes in Mexico and Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.
Achievements and Recognition:
-Because of her work with CLF, she was recognized by Harvard as the Humanitarian of the Year in 2017. Harvard praised her for the state-of- the-art cancer center in Barbados, her scholarship program, and her work to help girls attend schools in over 60 developing countries.
-Two months after receiving the Harvard Humanitarian of the Year, she was honored by Parsons School of Design Benefit for her philanthropic work. She also sent three Parsons students to Haiti to work with local designers on a merchandise line for @ClaraLionelFdn
-In February 2019, Rihanna received the prestigious NAACP President’s Award for her public service achievements with CLF. She received a standing ovation for her powerful speech in which she called for unity and action. "Tell your friend to pull up" was born that night #NavyPullUp
-Finally, Clara Lionel Foundation was recognized in the 2020 ranking of the World’s Most Innovative Companies in Not-For-Profit coming in 10th place. CLF was praised for their work in emergency preparedness and climate resilience.
