Fighting Through Trauma: Support Ky’s Healing Journey

On September 23rd, my life nearly ended. At 5:55 a.m., on my way to practice at the University of the District of Columbia, I was assaulted, robbed, and almost choked to death. In those terrifying moments, everything I’ve worked so hard for, my education, my athletics, my business, and my dreams, flashed before me. By the grace of God, I survived.

My name is Nhaikyia “Ky” Smith, and if you know me, you know I’ve always been a fighter. From starting at Howard Community College and earning my Culinary Arts degree, to transferring to UDC to chase my dreams, my journey hasn’t been easy.

While I was at JUCO, I ran cross country and track & field. My first year, I won regionals. My second year, I was leading the race, in first place all the way until about the last 50 meters when I passed out. Even in that moment, I refused to quit. I crawled to the finish line and came in 3rd place. What moved me most was that the girl who came in first still gave me her medal. That moment showed me that perseverance, humility, and community will always carry me through.

While also playing basketball at JUCO, I earned All-MD JUCO and All-Region honors, proving that no matter the sport or challenge, I’ve always given my all and pushed through adversity.

I’m a great kid, you can ask anyone. I get great grades, I literally go to practice, school, and repeat, all while maintaining a 3.5 GPA as a dual-sport athlete. My focus has always been on bettering myself, chasing my dreams, and making my family proud.

There were moments I thought I wouldn’t be able to continue school, like when past bills nearly kept me from registering until the very last day of classes. But by the grace of God, I was cleared. I was finally able to lace up for practice again, only to have my life nearly taken away.
Because of this incident, I will be out of work for a while. I work at First Watch, and being unable to work means I can’t cover my tuition during this semester. That is why I’m asking for help. Every dollar raised will go directly toward my tuition so I can continue my education.

Even in this dark time, I’ve realized something powerful, my support system is so much bigger than I ever imagined. Every prayer, kind word, and message has reminded me that I am not alone. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I am not just a student-athlete. I’m a certified chef and the proud owner of OHHMYYBYKY, where I share my love of food and creativity with my community. I chose to continue my education in biology because I’ve always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. One day, after vet school, I plan to open my own farm and bring my passions together by creating a farm-to-table restaurant that reflects everything I’ve fought for.

This is not the end of my story. God has a bigger plan for me. I survived for a reason, and with your help, I can continue to push forward toward my dreams.

Thank you for believing in me, for standing with me, and for helping me heal.
