Baseco Fundraiser

Baseco is Manila's largest slum and home to approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Children make up a sizable population of the slum.
During the Term 1 school holiday in April 2025, my middle son Oskar (Year 6 student) and I will journey to Manila, The Philippines, to spend some time volunteering at Baseco. We will be accompanied by my brother (David), who has been to Baseco many times over the past decade and who continues to support the work of the local church.
We are self funding the trip so every dollar raised will go directly to the people who need it the most.
During our time in Baseco, we will be:
- bringing and distributing Combantrin Chocolate Squares worming tablets (the children are happy to eat this because the chocolate is like a treat to them and doesn’t taste like medicine);
- hiring nurses to provide important health assistance to the people in Baseco (such as blood pressure and blood sugar testing, treatment for minor wound and skin condition, basic health education);
- bringing and distributing clothing;
- bringing and distributing small toiletry items (shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste);
- buying and distributing stationery items (books, pencils, colour pencils, etc.)
- holding a career workshop for older kids on how to get a job - we have prepared video recordings of Filipinos from various career backgrounds to inspire the young people of Baseco to study and navigate a career path outside of the slum;
- holding a local talent show where we will be giving away cash prizes (even a prize of $50 could be more than a week’s wage for the locals) and uplifting the community through entertainment and showcasing talent;
- spending time with the children at the slum by throwing them a party with games and food.
We will keep the receipts for purchased items for transparency and accountability.
