The purpose of the Spay-Neuter League, Inc. is to stop the breeding. Litters from strays struggle to survive, always needing food and shelter. Because cats are likely to hide, they may not be helped at all. A female can have two, sometimes three litters a year, a dog usually one. For pet owners, the vet's price for one cat is over $200, and a dog over $400. As I've told the City Council, one cat in alley may be 30 in one year!
Unfortunately, the private Shelter here is usually full, and we have no place to take strays. Litters from owned cats or dogs are handed out to anyone, without any assurance of them being spayed and neutered. Some of us trap feral cats and get them to the out-of- county vets willing to help.
The cats in traps came from a block that probably has thirty or more strays. In my subdivision, a favorite dumping ground for cats and an occasional dog, I've been dealing with "new arrivals" as well. The tux boy, the gray and white and a kitten, maybe three months old came to my door. Who dumps a tiny kitten! The tabby in the picture had horrific wounds from an attack and needed medical attention.
They didn't ask to be born in a place where indifference to their suffering just goes on and on. Sadly, it's kitten season here all year!
Spay-Neuter is a 501c3, founded in Terre Haute in 1978.
