The huge presence of federal ICE agents in Chicago right now is terrifying families who came here to the USA following all due processes to seek asylum, forced to leave their home country in fear of their lives.
I work with other volunteers in a mutual aid group. We continue to help welcome families to Chicago, whom we first met in our local police station when they arrived on buses from Texas in 2023 and were sleeping on the floors there awaiting shelter spots.
Right now, one of the families I remain close to are too afraid to stay in Chicago and have decided to leave, moving to a different state with much less ICE presence and where they have some extended family. The dad lost his job here in Chicago but has one lined up at the same factory as his cousin in the new state.
They are so afraid of being taken by ICE here, they hardly leave their home, and the mom is terrified of her American-born baby being taken from them, so they feel compelled to move away from Chicago.
I am trying to help them by raising the funds they need to a. Pay movers, otherwise they will have to leave their belongings behind, and b. Cover their first month of rent so they can get set up in a new apartment when they arrive in the new state.
If anybody can spare a small donation to help, it would be so appreciated at this very difficult time for this family.
Thank you
