My name is Immanuel Williams and I'm a Mathematics and Statistics lecturer at California State University, Monterey Bay. Even though I teach college students, I believe students should be introduced to mathematics at an early age, especially children of color. This has encouraged me and my wife, Kelley Williams, to create a children’s book titled, The Adventures of Jamear: Shapes All Around (#adventuresofjamear) illustrated by Alexander Hall-Pinner. We believe that students need to be involved in mathematics at an early age. By having a solid foundation in mathematics, this helps children peform better in STEM fields.
This book is about a young African American boy, Jamear, who learns about how shapes are relevant in the real world. Jamear learns about different shapes and how to see them outside of the classroom throughout the story. Find out more about Jamear and the series here.
We believe all children will learn from this book because it promotes learning inside and outside the classroom along with a diverse group of characters. We are using the GoFundMe to raise money for the up-front cost of printing. The book is written and the illustrations are complete. The series will be sold online through the website, school book fairs, and local book stores. A portion of the proceedings will be donated to a scholarship fund geared towards students studying STEM related fields.
