Sgt. Tyler A. Zody, age 20, died as a result of a training accident involving one vehicle that also injured three other soldiers at Fort Polk, Louisiana, July 24, 2014. Tyler was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team Rakkasans at Fort Campbell as a Senior Sniper. Tyler was born Aug. 21, 1993 in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Fleming Island High School in 2011. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army in July 2011. Tyler completed one combat deployment with the Rakkasans. His military education includes Basic Airborne Course, the Air Assault Course and the Warrior Leader Course. He also completed the Special Operations Target Interdiction Sniper Course as well as the U.S. Army Sniper Course. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Expert Marksmanship Badge. He was loved by so many, and achieved so much in his 3 years serving our country. He left this earth too soon, and our family would like to do something positive in his honor. We are raising funds for a memorial plaque and scholarship in his name at Fleming Island High School.
