In 2016, Carmen suffered a badly broken ankle that required surgical reconstruction. In December 2017, she began to have major swelling and pain at the site of the surgery. At first she was told her body was rejecting the hardware and that it needed to be removed. After surgery being put on hold for almost 6 months, she was finally able to have surgery to remove the hardware. The orthopedic surgeon said that her ankle looked fine, but a week later, the lab determined that she had chronic osteomyelitis, an infection in the bones of her ankle.
As if that wasn't bad enough, a week later she came down with C Diff that caused sepsis. She landed in the ER and they immediately admitted her for IV antibiotics.
Carmen was released from the hospital after several days but has required a PICC line for continuous IV antibiotics. She has suffered major complications due to the antibiotic she is on and may possibly have to file for FMLA when the school year starts.
I am trying to raise enough money for Carmen to cover the thousands and thousands of dollars she has racked up in medical bills and to help cover cost of living should she need to be out on FMLA.
Carmen is an amazing educator, education advocate, and is foster mom for animals who are looking for their forever homes. She has done so much for our community... now it's our turn to give back to her.
