Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.

As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.

Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.

Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

We want to help our mom focus on her recovery without the added stress of the bills piling up. If you’re in a position to help out, our family would be so grateful. If you can’t contribute financially, even just sharing this page with others would mean a lot to us.

Our parents have been so moved by the kindness everyone has shown them already. It’s honestly meant the world to them during these last few weeks, and they can’t stop talking about how lucky they feel to have such an amazing community behind them. They are so incredibly thankful for all of you, and so are we.
