As the new year began, all of us had new goals, new milestones and new dreams. Kevin and Amy Sidlo and their two beautiful daughters, Madison and Summer, residents of Pearland, Texas were no different. They entered into 2015 like any other year, but things were not off to a good start.
Strike one: Kevin, a successful Manufacturing Manager with his MBA and over two decades experience, was laid off from his job. There's never a good time to be laid off, but the timing could not have been worse. Kevin's eldest daughter, Madison (known to family and friends as Maddie) is a Senior in high school , involved in FFA and approaching graduation in May.
Kevin, having always put his family first, was undeterred. He lined up a job interview and went.
Strike two: On Friday, January 16, Kevin Sidlo, was driving eastbound on I-10 in Houston, Texas following a job interview when his car broke down. He managed to move onto the shoulder and call AAA to request assistance. While he was waiting, a speeding car veered out of traffic, striking both Kevin's car and a delivery truck, resulting in a three-car accident that shut down the freeway and was reported on all of the local TV news channels.
When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics found Kevin unconscious, lying on the ground. He was instantly taken to the Ben Taub Hospital Trauma Center. Upon arrival, he was promptly taken into surgery. The accident had resulted in the following injuries:
- Shattered left tibia (shin)
- Ruptured bladder
- Severed intestines
- Torn ligaments in right leg
- Severe trauma and laceration to the head
- Multiple lacerations and abrasions all over
- Multiple chips/breaks to the teeth
- Severe blood loss (4 units replaced)
After nearly ten hours, the initial surgeries were complete and appeared to have been successful. Kevin was then placed in ICU. The next day, Saturday, the doctors discovered that his left hip was also fractured. Then, on Sunday, things worsened further. Both Kevin's jaw and neck were fractured, but even more severe, he had developed bleeding and swelling on the brain. The doctors did want to sedate him as they were afraid of losing him, so his pain medication was significantly reduced, causing increased pain and discomfort.
At this time, Kevin is still in ICU in stable condition. He still requires multiple procedures and rehabilitation and things are touch and go because of the brain bleed. There has been a tremendous outpouring of love, prayer and support for this family and they are deeply grateful.
Kevin and Amy are an incredible, Christian couple who have done and given so much to others. They have given money, cooked meals, ran errands and taken care of many in need. Many times (i.e. Hurricane Katrina), they have opened their doors to complete strangers and invited them into their home and cared for them. I can say that they personally have been some of the best friends and family to my wife, Jana, and myself. There were times that we would not have made it if it had not been for them. Amy is a lifelong resident of Pearland, Texas. She currently works for the Pearland Independent School District, as her mother did for over 20 years before her. She and Kevin are friends to all who know them and have always given of themselves unconditionally. They have touched many lives, but now is a chance for us to touch theirs.
Any donation, great or small, will be a substantial blessing to this family. All donations will go to assist with their medical and living expenses during this time. This is a time to sincerely give to a worthy couple who are greatly in need. Please donate and after donating, please share this page with as many people as possible so that we can take the blessings that Amy and Kevin have given to so many and pay it forward.
I will post updates on Kevin's condition as they become available. If you have any questions, thoughts or would like to send a message to the family, please leave a comment below.
Thank you and God bless you!
