One of our employees was victimized by a scammer. Her name is Shelby.
He reached out to her by spoofing our CEO's email address. Impersonating our CEO, the scammer asked if she was available available to go to the store for him. Which she replied, "Of course." It was the CEO after all.
He asked for her cell phone number and if he could communicate with her via text. Our CEO is hands on and does communicate with employees via various forms of communication, so although this seemed unusual, it was not too out of the ordinary.
Once Shelby arrived at the store, he asked what kind of gift cards they had available. When she relayed that information, he asked her to purchase $500 worth gift cards and to send him the information.
At this point she was too afraid to let the CEO down, so she kept following his instructions. He continued to ask her to purchase in $500 increments, which she did naively. Ultimately, she purchased $3,000 in gift cards and transferred the information to the scammer.
We know that this can happen to anyone. Several other employees have been targeted in this manner, but were able to discover it was a scam prior to sending the funds.
Shelby is a single mother. She simply can't afford to bare this expense on her own. Therefore, we are trying to help by raising funds to make her whole again.
The company will match all contributions via this Go Fund Me effort dollar-for-dollar.
Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
