Stolen from Hawaii: A true story of a woman with a deadly disease who was ripped away from everyone and everything she knew
In 2007, my wife was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) while she was living in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a happy person with a good job and meant the world to our two children and our precious grandson. The Lord gave her the strength to deal with this terrible disease which eventually has left her confined to a hospital bed and unable to speak. She now requires 24 hour care and needs the help of myself and others to meet all her basic needs.
In 2011, while we thought that she was in the safety of the hospital where she was being cared for, she had a shock of her life. She was told by hospital administrators that she would be transferred to another facility in California because they needed her bed space. She was told there was no nursing home to take her. She lay there in her bed unable to speak or defend herself. She was able to move her head to suggest that “no “she did not want to go. That's when I stepped in to pick up the fight with her and for her.
You see, I'm her loving husband. I'm the one that would make the choice of changing my
own life for her who gave me mine. The time had come for me to step up while no one could help her. It's when we had to pray even harder than ever as a couple. And sure enough our Father our LORD our Redeemer came through. With a loud but loving voice I heard HIM and I just couldn't believe it. As tears and sweat ran down my face, I was having a really hard time with everything that was happening. I told my wife that God was talking to me. Then she had this glow on her face that I, her own husband, hadn’t seen for many years. But we knew what we had to do to confirm this. So we started to sing praises to our FATHER then started praying for guidance and help in our time of need.
Then I heard HIM once more. Then I guess the flesh started to go against HIM! It’s crazy, right? HE told me to go to the state capital. And so like the man of GOD that HE made me, I went and stood in front of directory. Then I closed my eyes and waited for the LORD to tell me what to do. Then the LORD said for me to scroll my eyes down. That's when I saw Senator Josh Green’s office. He was in charge of Hawaii's health care. So the LORD told me to go in and just pour out my heart and I did. I walked out of that office so filled with the Spirit that we knew that it was all GOD who did this though me for HIMSELF who lives in her. Ultimately, Darlene was able to stay in the hospital in Hawaii.
Fast forward, one year and nine months later and they tried to pull the stunt again. At that time, the holidays were around the corner when we received a 3 day notice. So once again, I went to the state capitol where we got help before. But this time we found out the person that helped us was retiring. He put us in touch with another person in the same office and promised me help and said not to worry. He said the new person was able to do the same thing that he did. We trusted this office because there is no price that anyone can put on a life. We formed a prayer group to pray for my wife and our situation. Then all the family came to say goodbye. Although we objected to the transfer, this time there was no stopping them. I was told I had to sign a release form. Now why would I do that? We didn't know where we would be going. Then the nurses told me I must sign for her medication to be released. So that is why we say that she was stolen and ripped away from the family she had raised and her world that she knew on what was called a “legal patient transfer”! Why? Just so the state of Hawaii could save some money? They destroyed my family, stole her civil rights and stole her dignity. Now we must to raise our own money to get her back to her family as well as everyone and everything she knows. For almost two years she has been living at a care facility thousands of miles from home in a small room she shares with two other patients. Our hearts ache to be home in Hawaii with our children and grandson. Last October, we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. I hope that we spend our next anniversary home in Hawaii with our family.
About a month ago the LORD came in a vision and He said that our time has come to an end. But how? I asked. HE said that everyone whom HE has touched though my wife and I should help and He will open people's hearts so that they would understand and know that God is calling and is in control of what is happening . But we are to wait upon the LORD and not to stop what HE has already started. We hope that help comes soon, but we surely could use even more. We believe that once anyone reads this letter that God is talking to you. Have you been listening to HIM?
