BREAK THE CHAIN FAMILY DISPLACED AFTER FIRE

My name is Sylvia and I am the founder of a non-profit called Break the Chain Kennel Kru. We assist families with chained dogs in the under-served communities of Guilford County, North Carolina. Tichina, her 3 kids and their dog Candy have been in our program for 3 years.

This morning (12/21), they were displaced after a house fire in an adjacent unit. We were able to immediately board Candy at our vet, Cardinal Animal Hospital which we are most grateful for. There were no injuries just lots of smoke damage. The family is unable to live in their rental as the fire damaged all their electrical structure. Their home was in very bad shape to begin with as the landlord didn't do much to help them. We recently paid to treat their home for cockroaches which were everywhere. The plumbing is also old and didn't work very well. Sadly, there are not many rentals available in their price point, but we are all doing what we can to help them. The family has no car.

Over the Christmas weekend, they will stay with her mom in a small apartment that doesn't allow pets. Next week, we plan to get them a suite at a pet-friendly hotel so they can be together with Candy again. Red Cross gave them a $500.00 card to help with lodging expenses but that won't cover many nights. They also received a referral voucher to the Salvation Army for help with clothing. Thankfully all the Christmas gifts which we just got them (sponsored by a generous family) are in good shape and with the family.

Funds raised will be used to help with continued lodging, food and hopefully a new place to live. I will be dispursing the funds as needed and will keep this page updated.
