Basra Water Crisis
Donation protected
As you may be aware the situation in Basra, Iraq is deteriorating. Citizens are struggling to find access to clean drinking water. Human Rights Advocates report that approximately 18,000 people have been poisoned by heavily polluted water. According to statistics from the health directorate, Basra’s water pollution is staggering. Chemical contamination stands at 100% and bacterial pollution at 50%, including in water from household taps.
Life has become harsh for all inhabitants of Basra province with citizens, livestock and fish all dying from the contamination of once sterile areas. Hospitals have become overwhelmed with the amount of patients suffering from the contaminated water. Some hospitals are reporting at least 400 patients seek treatment every day, with many more dying due to lack of treatment and medical supplies.
This initiative has been organised in order to raise funds to purchase clean drinking water to distribute within the city of Basra. This water will be distributed to those most affected by the contamination. Representatives from Sydney will travel to Iraq at their own cost to ensure that the distribution of water is done in a systematic way. Photo and video evidence of water distribution will be provided.
