A post from Ava's Mum, Naomi;
Our beautiful daughter Ava (3 years old) became unwell on Friday (4th July) with a high fever. Over the weekend, her condition worsened, and by Monday morning I took her straight to A&E. From there, we were urgently flown to Adelaide, Where Ava was diagnosed with Influenza A, pneumonia, and a bacterial infection.
Test results have now confirmed she has both pneumococcal and staph infections, which led to toxic shock syndrome. Her little body was fighting so hard, but she began to struggle-so the team sedated her and placed her on a breathing machine.
Her heart was also under immense strain, functioning at just 25%, so they performed emergency heart surgery and placed her on an ECMO pump to support her heart.
We've now been flown to Melbourne to be with the cardiology specialists.
Ava is currently stable, but there's still infection and fluid on her lungs. The next big step is clearing the infection so her heart can start working on its own again. It's going to be a long journey, and we don't know how long we'll be in Melbourne-but we're staying here for as long as it takes to get our girl well again.
On top of that, Valli (Ava's twin Sister) has also tested positive for Influenza A. She's now in the care of WCH in Adelaide with her Grandmother Marilyn, where they're keeping a very close eye on her to make sure she doesn't follow the same path.
Please send us all the strength, love, and luck you can-we're going to need it xx
