About our Building
Our building was built by the renowned Architects Peddie and Kinnear in 1862, as The Bank Of Scotland. The Cost was £2151 14/5!!
Peddie and Kinnear are also responsible for many famous buildings in Scotland between 1856 and 1887, banks, Hotels, Houses, Hospitals, Schools and Monuments, amongst them Aberdeen Municipal and County Buildings in Aberdeen as well as many of the tenements in Cockburn Street in Edinburgh. They came second in the competition to design The Wallace Monument, Stirling in 1859. If you look at the front of our building to the right hand side half way up you will see their initials.
About our Club
The Royal British Legion Scotland - Stonehaven Branch was initially formed at a meeting in the Upper Town Hall on 8th November 1967.
This resulted in the members getting the use of an upstairs lounge, free of charge, in The Marine Hotel.
Here they remained until 1969, when they leased upstairs in Mitchell & Muill, Allardice Street. At this time The Social Club was formed. The Womans Section was formed in 1972.
In 1978 they moved from Allardice Street to The Bank Of Scotland Building, Market Square, where we still are today.
In the 1970s there were about 160 members, rising to about 500 in the 80s and currently we have just under 300.
The first Chairman was Provost Stewart followed by Mr James Shankley, Mr Harry Ross, Mr Harrison McLean, Mr William Gordon, Mr James McDonald, Mr William Craddock, Mr Len McWilliams, Mr Calum Adams and our present chairman in Mr Gordon Ritchie.
NOW
Over the last 163 years our building has withstood many a North East storm. Over the years any faults have been "patched".
We have been fundraising for a number of years now and to date have raised (and spent) in excess of £16,000.
Most of the rear roof has been repaired or renewed, and we intend to start on the "Flat Roofs" now - again these too had just been patched over the years!
With your help we should soon be wind and water tight in the very near future.
Every penny we raise is being put into The Roof Fund in a bid to "keep a roof over our head".
Thank you for your donations, continued support and custom, we The Committee and members appreciate it very much.
