Support Amber and her family

Amber Kurnik is a much loved member of our community. She is only 15 years old but is currently extremely poorly in hospital. After weeks of being unwell, being unable to speak or walk, the doctors made the decision to put her in a coma to help her body cope with what it is going through and to assist with its recovery.

Amber is the youngest of three children and her mum Tracey, brothers, extended family and friends are absolutely devastated seeing Amber so unwell. Mum has understandably resigned from her job to concentrate on being with Amber during this period. She doesn’t drive so has to arrange lifts and catch buses to get to the hospital each day and is currently awaiting a room at Ronald McDonald House. She spends every day at Amber’s side.


The doctors have been baffled by Amber’s symptoms but in the last couple of days, they believe she may have lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease which can affect many parts of the body and unfortunately for Amber it is affecting her brain. This has resulted in seizures, loss of speech and loss of mobility amongst many other upsetting symptoms. It is likely that Amber will need to learn to talk and walk again.

This poor family have a very long road ahead. Amber will be in hospital for some time to come and her ongoing recovery will be slow. Thankfully Amber has an extremely supportive extended family to support her and her family, but these are extremely tough times.
