Dear Family and Friends,
On my father’s sabbatical five years ago, we had the opportunity to go to South Africa. We toured the beautiful landscapes of this majestic country and saw wildlife that one only sees on television. We also had the opportunity to spend a little time in the rural villages of Kwazulu Natal to see the great work of Zimele. It was an unforgettable experience. We were both very young (Christina 12 and Kayla 9) when we first visited South Africa. As a result, we were not able to grasp the full depth and breath of the work of Zimele. Zimele, which means “standing on your own two feet” in Zulu, is a non profit organization that focuses on helping Zulu women and children deal with the root causes of poverty. Because our father is the president of Zimele USA, we have always heard about the wonderful stories surrounding their mission and purpose. Therefore, when we heard about an opportunity to go back to South Africa for a mission trip to Zimele, we could not pass it up. For this mission trip, we want to love, learn, and serve the Zulu people that Zimele Wethu impacts on a daily basis.
We are excited for this mission trip because we will spend the majority of our time with the women and children of Zimele. We will get the opportunity to experience what it is like to live in the rural villages of South Africa, and also spend days working to build cinder blocks with a group of women who do this to support themselves and their families to stand on their own two feet. We will also teach computer workshops to the women and young adults so that they can become more familiar with it and hopefully make themselves more marketable. We know that it will not be easy, but we are excited to get first hand experience of what life is like for these women who live in poverty, yet through Zimele, they are succeeding in every area of their lives.
Seeing God work in other places, especially impoverished areas like South Africa is important to us because it helps put things in perspective. Many times, we take for granted what we have here in the States. We have access to all the basic resources of food, water, education, medicine, etc... In places like South Africa many basic necessities are not as accessible, as a result, their dependence is solely on God through organizations like Zimele. Thus, we think it is important for youths like us to experience something like this because we often stray away from God when we focus on things that are not important to Him. We believe that this mission trip will be a humbling life transforming experience for us.
As we are presented with this amazing opportunity, we humbly ask for your support. We will be going to South Africa on July 23rd - 31st, and we would be grateful for any donations and prayer support. We need to fundraise a total of $4,000 to cover the cost of the trip for the both of us. For any donations that you will so generously like to give to us, you can donate to us through our Go Fund Me page, a check (payable to “Metro Community Church”), or cash. If you have any question or would like to learn more about what we will be doing in South Africa, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you so much. We are eternally grateful,
Christina and Kayla Ahn
