Get my Mom & Grandmother off the Gulf Coast
Two years ago, I threw out 80% of my mom and elderly grandmother’s belongings after Hurricane Harvey stalled out over my hometown and the apartment they share took on 18 inches of water. Through the power of community and the selfless giving of so many people I know and even some I don’t, they pieced an apartment’s worth of furniture back together and found some sense of normalcy.
Two days ago, a tropical depression dumped 42 inches of water on my hometown again, and faster, and now we find ourselves once again facing throwing away most of their belongings, with the added bonus of very likely needing to find her a new vehicle as well, since she didn’t evacuate.
My mom doesn’t work, she takes care of my elderly grandmother. They don’t have renter’s insurance and the car was on liability only. We’ve decided that twice in as many years is enough flooding and we are going to relocate them to Arkansas. We’re going to need gas money, beds, dressers, a couch, a recliner, a tv console cabinet, kitchen table and chairs, dog beds, clothes.. and that’s just what I can think of off the top of my head. I’ll be heading down there in the next couple days to help salvage what we can and I’ll have a better idea then of what we need.
Whatever you can donate will help and I appreciate more than I can say. If you can’t donate money but have some furniture you’re willing to part with cheap or for free, I’d appreciate that too. If you can’t do either then I still appreciate you even reading this.
