A Small School Doing Big Things

Donation protected
Our school seeks your help to send our remarkable students off to college on the right foot. As a culminating gesture of our love for our kids, we hope to send them all off to college with money that they can spend on college-related expenses not covered by your typical financial aid packages and/or scholarships. These expenses include necessities such as bed sheets, towels, toiletries, jackets for those kids heading off somewhere colder--any expense they’ll encounter related to what they need in order to feel ready as they head off to the next phase of their lives. We hope to raise enough to give each of our eighty college-bound kids $200.

College is, of course, a prohibitively expensive undertaking, and many of our students have done the work necessary to curb the expenses related to credits and tuition. But expenses lurk in every facet of a college-bound senior’s future, and many of those expenses cannot be defrayed by standard financial aid.

Our kids deserve this. They’ve survived trying times arising from circumstances that are beyond their control. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; some of them live in homeless shelters; some have parents who cannot care for them because they are not themselves healthy enough to do so or because they only have time to work; some had their educations interrupted or delayed by familial and, in certain cases, natural disasters. Even as their parents celebrate their kids’ successes, they fear the financial burden looming on the horizon, and we want to help out.

Our school deserves this. We’re a small Title 1 school that will soon graduate our third class of seniors. In 2016, our first year with graduating seniors, we graduated 93% of our students; in our second year, we graduated 97% of our seniors; and now in our third year we’re set to graduate 96% of our seniors. Schools comparable to ours graduate 73% of their students and the citywide average is 74%. And we do this with kids who’ve come to us not having felt success in school before coming to us: they learn to be students here; they grow and succeed in our little community.

We want our kids to leave here feeling recognized for what they’ve done. Please donate what you can to help us reach our goal. We know this is an ambitious goal, but at BILA we’re full of ambition.

Help this little school continue to do big things!
