Dan's SMART Trip South Africa

"Dan, you got me to your page, what is it exactly your asking for?"
Well, first of all, thank you for considering to invest in my SMART project trip to South Africa. As part of a competitive application process, I was accepted into the SMART Cornell program. I'll be working with the University of KZN University .Through a collaborative approach and analysis, my team will provide capacity building tools to the Swayimane Community for their horticulture products. It's really an amazing opportunity to put the technical and analytical skills I've learned over the past year to the test. I look forward to also learning more about soil, agronomy, and horticulture as part of the process.

As a planner, I'm also interested in how gender and power dynamics influence such economic and community development. Therefore, as a secondary component, I hope to produce a creative piece (i.e., audio, photographs, maps, etc) based on field research and/or interviews on issues of diversity related to gender roles & identity.
Financials:
The program fellowship covers all lodging and non-personal expenses for the program from January 6-16. It does not cover the flight or personal expenses. It will not cover expenses outside of these dates.
Please help me fund:
-Flight (approximately $1500 roundtrip)
-Transportation (Capetown to Jo'burg and local)
-Hostels for Dec. 30-Jan 5. & Jan 17-20
-Cost of audio equipment for creative piece
-Prints
-Misc. personal expenses/food
Other funding sources:
You might be surprised to know that Cornell sources have very limited funding. I'm applying to competitive grants but even if approved, they will not come in until after the trip. Any funds that are reimbursed will be used for further research and work on the creative final components- cds, high-quality maps, photography.

I plan on being completely transparent about all funding to the best of my ability.
So now that you know, will you help me get there?
<3 Dan
Let me know if you have any questions, too!
