We are Sewing4Kingston , a volunteer group of over 1360 sewers in Kingston upon Thames making essential gear for NHS staff, care workers, and key workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We make bags for uniforms, hairbands, scrub hats, button ear protectors, scrunchies, scrubs for care homes, and most recently, gowns for a children’s home. To date, we have made and distributed over 13314 items around the borough and have orders for at least 7000 more. Click here to see Sewing4Kingston making scrubs.
As well as masses of eager sewers, we have drop off and pick up co-ordinators, people donating elastic, buttons and fabric, a transport team, and people contacting key workers to find out what they really need.
The people we deliver to - be they nurses, doctors, technicians, policemen, firemen, ambulance drivers, care workers, refuse collectors, or community works - are so grateful. They see something homemade and it makes them feel appreciated and valued in their job. Some have cried, others have written with thanks for our work and one even said they'd frame their bag.

We have created a wonderful family of volunteers willing to do so much for all those who are working so hard to keep us safe and well. We have a large book of orders waiting to be completed. We are also beginning to receive requests from schools for staff who are working in difficult circumstances.
We are now asking for your help. Although we’ve had lots of donated sheets and fabric this is running out and we still need large amounts of fabric for gowns and fabric for scrubs and aprons.
We have launched a fund to help us buy the material needed to fulfil our orders and continue making essential kit for our key workers across the borough.
With your help, we won’t stop sewing. Thank you.
With warm wishes,
Dr Kate Kenyon
