I’m David Habat, and I am pursuing my dream of being a freestyle wrestling Olympian at the Rio 2016 Summer Games this August in Brazil.
I have wrestled almost my entire life and have always aspired to wrestle in the Olympics. I wrestled collegiately at Edinboro University for Coach Tim Flynn where I was a two-time All-American, finishing as the NCAA Division One runner-up my senior year. I graduated from there last year. My career record at Edinboro was 134-27, fifth on their all-time career win list. Presently I am training at the University of Michigan, wrestling with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, working hard and getting better every day. I prepped at Cleveland St. Ignatius High School in Ohio, where I was a State Champion and placed 2nd, 3rd and 3rd during the four years there wrestling for Coach Mark Sullivan. I finished my career there with a record of 147-16.

My opportunity to compete in the Olympics is an interesting one. I was born in the United States, have lived here my entire life, but am pursuing a spot in the Games wrestling for the country of Slovenia. My mother, Carmen, was born in Slovenia, therefore making me eligible to wrestle for them in the Olympics.

But, Slovenia doesn’t have a freestyle wrestling team, so it’s up to me to make it happen on my own. I recently wrestled in the World Championships representing Slovenia, and had to design and have my Slovenian singlet made on my own.

Pursuing my Olympic dream will not come cheaply. I will be required to qualify by wrestling in Europe. Your help will provide funding for airline costs, lodging, meals, etc., while I attempt to qualify in the 65 kg (143 lb.) weight class.
Will you be watching to Olympic Opening Ceremonies when I walk into Opening Ceremonies in Rio de Janeiro? Will you say, "There he is, and I helped get him there!”
