Avery's Fight for Answers
My best friend's daughter, Avery, has a devastating medical mystery that is preventing her from enjoying a normal, happy, healthy childhood. It's the story of how a healthcare system has failed a child who has been stricken with ongoing seizures and other dire symptoms like ataxia, learning and motor delays and gastrointestinal problems.
A solution is on the horizon but we need YOU to make it happen.
Avery has been asked to take part in the MAID clinic at Boston Children's Hospital, a specialized clinic that treats kids with multiple autoimmune diseases who have no diagnosis. However, Avery and her family cannot afford to make the trek to Boston Children's on their own.
I've attached a photo of her so that you can see what a beautiful child she is - and I've attached a photo of her at the hospital, so you can see her strength.
Avery was born a healthy baby, but the symptoms started within the first few months of her life. She has been to the best doctors in the country including geneticists, neurologists, GI specialists and immunologists - each of whom cannot come up with a diagnosis.
She's undergone treatment for seizures and atypical opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome to include daily steroid injections, monthly infusions and a round of chemotherapy; several MRIs and scans looking for tumors; countless genetic and autoimmune disease tests and exome sequencing. Still no answers. Results have led only to more questions.
I'm asking you to help my best friend and her husband, both of whom work full time to make ends meet. Help them get the medical treatment and the answers Avery needs and deserves. Any amount is appreciated and no amount is too small. Please share this with friends and family. Thank you in advance for your support.
With great sincerity,
Kate Carver
