My name is Alex Young. I am 48 years old and was diagnosed with incurable Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), in January of 2015. I have lost the use of my arms, hands and legs and my speech is nearly gone. My decline has been rapid and continues hourly. Additionally, I have intense pain due to degenerative disk disease and arthritis in the spine which two surgeries and injections have not alleviated.
I have an eight year old daughter, Alina, whom I can no longer be a father to. I fear that my loss is no worse than hers as I watch her struggle to make sense of a Daddy who is, essentially, no longer there. She is an extremely bright child; not just a father’s braggadocio, but verified by her teachers and those who know her. Her curiosity is endless and we have spent hundreds of hours together enjoying all manner of exploration. It has been an indescribable joy for me to watch her so eager to know and her delight when she “gets it”. She has a potentially bright future, but we need your help.
Alina is strong and physically adept. She loves to read, draw, sing and fish. She is sweet, funny and loving. Her family unit is small and of modest means. We try to make the most of what we have.
The amount of suffering in today’s world is staggering and it makes one heartsick in the inability to cure it all. I can’t do it, and those of you reading this can’t do it. I do believe, however, that we can start somewhere and that it should be with the children, as I also believe that these are the children who are going to find the cures for disease, the ways to peace, and a better life for them and for us all. I have done my best with my daughter, but given the average life span of 2 to 3 years that ALS affords, I won’t be able to see it through. I want her to be educated and that is the purpose of this outreach. This exceptional child makes the remaining time I have not only bearable, but joyful. I want her to have a chance to realize her great potential and I believe that is best accomplished through education. Please help me raise funds for Alina’s college education. The funds are needed today to earn enough to afford her college options in the coming years. My family and friends have committed to manage the fund, preserving and growing it so Alina can realize a quality education toward the future she so deserves. Please help me and Alina.
