Help us Save our Super Nova Prime

8/24 - UPDATE -
We have the best kind of update for y'all - Nova has been cleared to go home, and we'll be picking him up at 2pm today!!!

We want to also just thank everyone who has helped by donating, or sharing, or providing us with other support and guidance that we so desperately needed. We're genuinely humbled by how many folks in our community (and beyond) stepped up and helped us out - please know we'll never forget this.

We are still facing some hefty bills, but this will help put a huge dent in our remaining vet bills and make sure that he can receive the best medications and aftercare that he needs without worry.

Truly, thank you all again. We can't wait to bring our boy home. <3

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you’re reading this, you probably know who Nova is - our sweet, gentle, wiggly boxer mix who we adopted last November when we moved out to the PNW. He makes appearances in our Zoom meetings, he’s the star of our social media, and everyone who meets him talks about just how he is the goodest of boys - and he truly is.

On Friday, 8/18, right before we were planning on picking Nova up from where he was staying while we were visiting family, we got a call from the boarders that he hadn’t eaten since the morning before - and that he seemed lethargic. When we picked him up less than an hour later, we could tell immediately something was wrong. Our boy was barely wagging his tail, and he refused to get up unless we physically helped him.

When we got to our local ER vet, they initially thought he was experiencing end-stage kidney disease, and told us we might have weeks *at best* with him. Thankfully, after some aggressive treatment, it was determined that he was just incredibly dehydrated, and his kidney levels were less of a concern.

However, the following day, Nova just seemed to be getting worse and worse. The ER staff noticed that he was having trouble breathing and there was some odd discharge coming from his nose. We were told it was medical mystery - and we watched in terror as he just seemed to get sicker and sicker.

Thankfully, an eagle-eyed vet finally figured out that the *most likely* cause of all of these concerning health mysteries is that Nova accidentally inhaled a grass seed or similar foreign body and it was wreaking havoc on his lungs and surrounding area. Tests confirmed an infection in or around the lungs, but the CT he had was unfortunately inconclusive.

While Nova is (thankfully) showing marginal signs of improvement, he’s been transferred to a specialty ICU in Portland for further treatment as of today (8/22). While we’ve managed to pay all of his vet costs up-front so far, we’ve cleaned out our savings and opened up credit cards to offset the staggering costs.

As it currently stands, we have spent over 15K in the last five days to try to keep our baby alive. We’ve been told by nearly every vet who has seen him (and there have been six!) that he’s improving slowly - but that he has a long road ahead before he’s better.

We’re asking you to consider donating what you can to help us offset future costs. There is a chance that Nova will face a surgery next week that could alleviate his symptoms - but also comes with a 10K price tag on top of what we’ve already paid in deposits, and includes a long and challenging recovery.

We’ve been told nearly every day now that it may be his last, but he’s spent the last five days proving that he’s a fighter and he wants nothing more than to come back home with us.

We wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t our only option. We’re also selling from our various collections to try to help offset costs as well, if that interests you. We have two forms of pet insurance, but they require us to pay up front and then they’ll reimburse us once his “case is closed” - and to be quite honest, we’re more or less maxed out on what they’ll reimburse anyway.

We love Nova more than we love ourselves, and we just want to give him a fighting chance to get better. We want to celebrate his “gotcha day” in a few months with him, and buy him a silly matching costume (with us) for Halloween. We haven’t even had him for a year, and we just passed the anniversary of losing our first baby, Luna, last month. We don’t want to have to make the worst decision of our lives purely because we’ve run out of the money we need to save him.

As we learn more from the ICU vet specialists, I’ll post updates here and adjust the funding goal to match whatever procedures he’ll need. Any additional funding will cover after-care costs or be donated back to the ER that took such good care of him this last week.

Thank you in advance. We love you, and Nova loves you.
