Thank you so much for pausing from the hustle and bustle of life to read about this very special family! We go about our busy daily activities with 2 hands, 2 feet and it takes all that we have some days to manage our children and family. Now take a moment to jump into a day in the life of this precious lady, sister, friend, daughter, mother, wife, and my hero!!!
Try to imagine getting into your car on a hot summer day, turning up the ac and running a few errands. A quick in and out at the grocery store, a trip to the YMCA, a stop at a restaurant for a bite to eat. You hop in, you hop out. You know your seat will cool down quickly with the car running and you probably don’t worry about sitting on a seat wet from the rain.
Now imagine you can’t do any of that. Pretend for a minute that going anywhere is a production requiring the help of multiple individuals. No quick grocery store trips, no easy bathroom breaks, no dry seat when it’s raining. This is Kim’s reality. Her wheelchair is currently exposed to the elements when in transport and as a result requires extra care to protect it and Kim. In the summer the seat is lava hot from the sun or the electronics fry when it rains. Her rear mounted chair rack drags the ground when hitting bumps on our Oklahoma roads.
Kim has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) – a form of Muscular Dystrophy. She is completely dependent on a motorized wheelchair to get her around. To get Kim in and out of the car is difficult, not just for those that assist her, it’s hard on Kim’s body as well. Kim has to transfer in and out of her wheelchair every single time she wants to go somewhere. This means, if she has 2 stops to make she is transferring 6 times with her caregiver getting her chair off the ramp in back of the van each time and then putting it back on when done. Kim has dealt with bruises, broken toes and legs, skinned knees, bumps on the head…and she does it all without complaining. There are no “quick” trips for Kim. She is unable to go anywhere if it rains, snows or is too hot because weather damages the electronics on her power chair. Her life is so limited because of a simple vehicle that would bring freedom, make it easier and give them more energy to do things together!
Kim is a busy homeschooling mom to 2 beautiful children and a wife to a hardworking man. For many years they have gracefully dealt with transferring in and out in their regular minivan. But as her disease progresses it has become increasingly difficult for Kim to transfer. The time has come for a wheelchair accessible van. We may not be able to heal her condition or reverse the effects of SMA on her body but we can give her the ability to go places and ease the strain on Kim’s (and her caregivers’) body. Used wheelchair accessible vans cost around $50,000, and they are not easy to find.
Are you willing to help Kim? $50,000 is A LOT, but if 5,000 people give $10 each or 500 people give $100 each, we can provide freedom to this family. We believe that the body of Christ is designed to care for all and we thank God in advance for providing and for using each and every one of YOU to do it!! Much love and blessings~
