Help us continue to save lives
I'm raising money in aid of Devon Air Ambulance Trust and every donation will help! Six months ago our lives changed forever when we had the phone call that my brother had fallen and hit his head and needed immediate medical assistance and life-saving brain surgery. Without the incredible crew from the Devon Air Ambulance, we would have lost my brother to this fall. After being taken by air ambulance he was flown from the site he had his accident and was taken to the hospital within 15 minutes. Only because of this incredibly quick work did my brother get seen in time and had his life saved.
Craig's story:
When Craig fell his body went into a deep coma, he was flown by Devon Air Ambulance to have immediate brain surgery as this was a life or death situation. After this, he stayed in intensive care where he would stay in a coma for over 4 weeks. Whilst in his coma he suffered from a nasty chest infection which doctors had to keep under control as this was increasing his temperature which the brain does not like as well as keeping his diabetes under control ( Craig is type 1 diabetic) After waking he then went to the incredible care at the hospital Mount Gould where he spent 4 months in Plym ward where he was given 24hr care and rehabilitation for his movement including arm work, leg work, walking and speech therapy.
We were told his personality might not be the same due to his brain damage, Craig had to relearn how to swallow, speak, and walk whilst coming accustomed to his surroundings and people. For the first few months, Craig was unable to walk or lift himself, we spent weeks visiting him at the hospital where his body would make movements but these were not intentional they were only as the brain was healing. For the first few months, Craig did not recognise any of his friends and family which as you can imagine is a heartbreaking situation, however as time has come around his memory has improved and he now recognises the ones closest to him. As Craig hit the left side of his head this has affected the right side of his body meaning he currently finds it hard to walk and move his hand although granted this is getting better each day with hard work from enablers and Craig's strong will to get better.
Due to his surgery, Craig currently has part of his skull missing as this was removed when he had his brain surgery. He is waiting to have a titanium plate put in to replace and remould his head back which as you can imagine he is looking forward to having as this will allow him more independence
I and my family are forever in debt to this charity and can not thank them enough for what they have done. Incredibly this work was done by volunteers who need donations to keep saving lives just like my brothers. This entire journey of incredible willpower and strength would not have been possible if it wasn't for Devon Air Ambulance who assisted my brother on October 18th 2022. If they didn't get to him in time and get him into the hospital we wouldn't have this incredible story to tell. I am so unbelievably grateful for this charity and incredibly proud of my brother who has come so far.
Do you want to join me in making a difference? Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause which means so much to me.
