Jonathan Hutson is organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Mike Nichols.
His name is Mike Nichols.
I still remember the first time I saw him. Wearing #35, he went over left tackle in a Lewisville High School scrimmage against De Soto in August 1972, and sprinted nearly 50 yards. Anyone who got in his way was promptly run over, and that included teammates! When he crossed the goal line, he was dragging two De Soto tacklers with a third one on his back!
When I joined the LHS Fighting Farmers football team a few days later, I met this man. I was the new kid in town and was intimidated by just about everyone. Mike-also known as "Dawg"-helped me to overcome that. I quickly learned that the biggest thing about this giant of a man was his heart.
Mike was not only a talented athlete, but played in the band and was an even more talented musician. He was-and is-the kind of man that one simply cannot dislike.
We graduated from LHS in 1974 and we went our separate ways, but I saw my friend at the only high school reunion that I was able to make. He wore the same infectious smile that we all know and love, and he still looked as though he could-in the words of Coach Bill Shipman-"strap 'em on with anyone!"
Earlier this year, Mike underwent back surgery to repair three fractures he sustained in a fall. Shortly after that surgery, Mike sustained a fourth fracture. During the surgery to repair that fracture, Mike was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
Multiple myeloma is a very rare cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. There are fewer than 200,000 cases of multiple myeloma in the United States every year. There is no cure, but there is treatment.
In Isaiah chapter 40, God's word asks us, "Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?"
My personal belief is that the Hands that did all of this-during the seven days of creation -are the same Hands that have always been holding Mike Nichols-and for that matter, the rest of us-since before we were born. We worship a powerful God, Who is the Author and Finisher of all things. And that God would also have us do what we can to help one another.
Mike and his lovely wife Rocky and their children are traveling on a very rough road, that is likely to get even more rough. Treatment is painful and expensive, but we have it within our power to help with part of that.
And we have God and the power of prayer to help with the rest of it.
Tonight, I am asking two things from all who read this:
First, pray for Mike Nichols. Pray for a positive mindset, and for the constant presence of "the peace that passes all understanding." Mike needs our prayers. He needs to be surrounded by those who know him best and who love him the most.
I love Mike Nichols, as I know that you do. When I am on my knees tonight, I will ask for God's continued love and protection for him. I ask you to do the same.
Second, donate to this account. Mike can no longer work, and he and Rocky are going to have a lot of expenses. It is up to us to help a man who in his lifetime has helped so many.
No donation is too small.
May God bless Mike "Dawg" Nichols, may God bless you, and may God bless our combined efforts.
