StreetSquash is a nonprofit organization geared around academic and athletic improvement of its students. StreetSquash’s mission is to provide consistent, long-term, and reliable support to the children, families, and schools in Harlem and Newark. By exposing students to a broad range of experiences and by maintaining the highest standards, StreetSquash helps all participants realize their academic, athletic, and personal potential. It introduces the sport of squash to its students, as well as focuses on improving academic performance. 100% of participants graduate from High School, and 98% of students matriculate into a college or post-secondary program.
I'm Kenny Tang, an avid squash player who wants to make a positive impact on the community through the use of sport and academics. I discovered StreetSquash a few years ago while competing against some of the students in a tournament. After inquiring about the program and learning about its values and positive impact on my community of New York City, I was immediately drawn to use my abilities to help out. For the past three years, I have been a volunteer squash coach and tutor at the program, building a keen bond with many of the students through match play and fun experiences during the summer and school year. Through StreetSquash, I was able to share my love of squash, as well as my knowledge of academics with the students at the program. I began to understand the significance of my work, and how our mutual interest in sports and learning was helping the students along their path to success. Many of them had strong goals such as being the first in their family to attend university, and I am proud to have offered my skills in squash and academics to help turn their goals into reality.
Annually, there is typically a junior charity tournament to raise funds in support of StreetSquash. Last year, I participated and raised over $1600 for the program. However, due to the unique circumstances of Covid-19, this tournament was forced to be postponed. Lots of potential funding was lost as a result, and that could have an adverse affect on the program as a whole. Donating to this amazing after school program will not only serve to provide crucial money to help keep the organization running, but better the experience of the students and help them reach their goals. Please feel free to contribute as much as you wish, anything is appreciated!
