FAQ
1. What is Brooklyn Brokers United (BBU)?
BBU was founded as a joint effort between a number of Brooklyn commercial real estate brokers in early 2020. Our core mission is to provide opportunities and assistance to those who are too often overlooked. To date BBU has established a fund to help support The Campaign Against Hunger, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, an economic opportunity program, and the soup kitchen and shelter CHIPS. Of great importance to BBU is the promotion of diversity in our industry through education and support of the next generation of real estate professionals. Our goal is to raise awareness, promote education, and enact meaningful change in our Brooklyn community.
2. What is Project Destined?
Founded in 2016 by Cedric Bobo, Project Destined’s mission is to transform underserved youth into owners and stakeholders in the communities in which they live, work and play. Project Destined is a leading social impact platform that provides training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship and real estate. Project Destined partners with corporations, schools and non-profits to deliver training using its proprietary e-learning platform and live courses. Project Destined leverages a work-based learning approach where students work with executives to evaluate live deals in their community and present them in a pitch competition to industry leaders. Scholars emerge with the skills, confidence, experiences and networks that prepare them to secure a strong first job and to become stakeholders in their community To date Project Destined has trained 900+ scholars, of whom have earned over $250,000 in college scholarships, with 70% of having secured internships, full-time jobs and or real estate industry certifications.
3. What does the partnership mean?
The commercial real estate industry severely lacks both racial and gender diversity, in order for that to change there is need for meaningful action. This partnership, ‘The Keys to Brooklyn’ with Project Destined will be our first effort towards realizing this change. Together we can make an impact towards ending racism and social injustice, while supporting those in our Brooklyn communities that fight these issues on a daily basis. We will be providing opportunities to our fellow citizens who have for too long been denied a pathway to success.
4. How will we work together?
The Keys to Brooklyn will raise money to launch the first Project Destined program in the borough of Brooklyn.
5. What will the program do?
The program will be a real estate competition pairing teams of CUNY students with active real estate brokers to teach the students how to identify, analyze, finance, and pitch a commercial property in Brooklyn. Students will earn a stipend of $500 as part of an 8 week course and compete in bi-weekly competitions where they can earn an additional $5,000 in scholarships. All participants in the competition will receive full reimbursement for the cost of their real estate license upon exam completion. Our hope is that this becomes a yearly event and will result in internships and job opportunities for all student participants.
6. How can you get involved?
Our first step is to raise $50,000 to launch the course for 25-30 college students. You can get involved in the following ways:
1. Make a donation.
2. Help us spread the word.
3. Join BBU and Project Destined by volunteering your time as an industry expert to mentor a student or coach a team through the competition.
