Stopping Stigma & Enjoying Recovery
The Wellness Center is an amazing place! On a typical day, 50 to 70 people living with mental illness come for groups, classes and peer support. Over 1,000 individuals come to The Wellness Center (TWC) each year! We have 12 Recovery Coaches and 3 administrative staff, all of whom have lived experience with mental illness - are living stable, productive and -for the most part ;-) happy lives! TWC is a Program of San Joaquin County Behavioral Health Services and starting July 1, 2017, will be run by Peer Recovery Services -the FIRST peer run organization in San Joaquin County. Recovery is Possible!
TWC is a non-clinical center and "evidence based practice" located right across the street from the main entrance to the old State Hospital grounds. Our address is 1109 N. California Street, Stockton, CA (95202). Conveniently, we are a short walk to crisis services. It's nice because we can sometimes walk a member to "Crisis Services" when needed -fortunately this is rare.
Deena Strachan was once too nervous to come here. After several months, her husband took her by the hand and they walked into TWC. She liked the friendly people and felt like she could improve her life here. Months later she graduated from the Volunteer Program and some months after that, when a paid position opened up, she applied. Yep, she was hired and has been a Recovery Coach here for over 4 years :-)
It was Deena's idea to have a walk (first walk had 25 participants!) to reduce stigma and raise awareness that recovery from serious mental illness is possible.
Many credit TWC with saving their life and helping to make their life worth living. Come for a tour! We'd love to show you around.
TWC is for people living with mental illness (most of us have a diagnosis, but it's not required) who want more wellness in their life. Our purpose is serving the under-served and the un-served. All are welcome!
