300 Miles for my Mom and Brain Cancer Research
My name is Mary Gerend, and in January 2025, my amazing-strong-kick-ass mom, Amy Gerend, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a stage 4 brain tumor. Last year was extremely difficult for my family and I- navigating constant change, uncertainty, anxiety, and at times what felt like hopelessness. Throughout everything my mom has remained grateful. She inspires me to live everyday to the fullest and to give back to the world which has given me so much.
But the biggest lesson my mom has taught me is to fight passionately and relentlessly for what is right. In 2025, ZERO federal dollars were allocated to Glioblastoma research in (compared to $10 million in 2024). More than 13,000 Americans are diagnosed each year, and glioblastoma accounts for nearly half of all cancerous brain tumors. Cancer patients need a cure, they need to know that their diagnoses isn't hopeless. Cancer families need help, support, and relief. We can do better, and that is why I am joining the fight.
Last year I ran 100 miles in April, raising nearly $2500 for cancer research. This year, I hope to double that. My goal is to bike 300 miles, and raise $5000 benefitting the Head for the Cure Foundation in their mission to uplift the brain cancer community.
