Who We Are -Our Website
B’nai Havurah (Colorado Jewish Reconstructionist Federation) is affiliated with Reconstructing Judaism, which is committed to the renewal of American Jewish life. Our movement defines Judaism as an evolving religious civilization that encompasses history, literature, art, music, land, and language. We achieve this through study, worship and joyous practice, social justice, acts of kindness, and connection with the Jewish people. We are an egalitarian and participatory community, open to a variety of perspectives and forms of religious expression.
The funds we raise through the Other Half campaign support programs and operational costs. Though our building has not been open since March, our expenses, for the most part, remain static. And, we've seen a decrease in dues and tuition payments due to Covid's negative financial impact on many of our member families.
Despite many challenges this year, B'nai Havurah continues to flourish.
We offered our first of several b'nai mitzvahsvirtually in March, came together for several Music Shabbatot, saw an increase of participants for all of our services, and crafted learning and social opportunities online for adults and children. We gathered for our first annual event, complete with a comedy show (we needed a laugh!), mask fashion show, and auction. In all, we raised more than $20,000 and had a great time in the process!
Our Board of Trustees, members of our Chesed committee, and several other volunteers embarked on a phone and outreach campaign to check in with our members offer help in a number of ways. New friendships were formed and continue today. The Simler family baked dozens of challot that were delivered to members. Their effort brightened Shabbat for so many.
We created meaningful High Holy Day services that provided a sense of belonging, meaning and community for our members and friends. Reports from our members and many of our friends were positive: most people felt they were part of a close-knit community during the High Holy Days and appreciate the phenomenal effort of all who were involved.
Our work in social justice and commitment to our Positioning B'nai organizations, Colorado Faith Communities United To End Gun Violence (CFCU) and Coloradans for the Common Good (CCG) continued throughout the year.
This year, through the CBG Family Fund's generosity, we launched A Year of Learning, which has allowed us the opportunity to expand and enhance our learning, collaboration, and celebration opportunities even further. In a few short months, we've increased our understanding of the issues related to racial justice with plans to learn more.
And, Year of Learning also offered, in collaboration with Reconstructing Judaism and support from the CBG Family Fund, an enlightening program exploring the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through a progressive Zionist perspective offered by Rabbi Maurice Harris.
We've highlighted only a part of what we have accomplished in 2020! It is clear that B'nai Havurah perseveres and thrive despite adversity!
If you are able, would you please make a year-end gift to the Other Half?
