Rebuilding the Superdrome

$10,650 of $15,000 goal

Current situation:
The Superdrome structure was auctioned and sold to race car track, who just wanted the lights and the stands. They were planning on selling the track structure for scrap metal. I negotiated the purchase, and wrote the check for the facility. We bought it instead. IT'S OURS!! Now, to move it and rebuild it.
How we got here:
In December 2017, the College and the City decided to discontinue their management agreement of the Superdrome. The City was willing to renew it, but the College refused. They passed a $600 million-dollar bond package for new buildings and facilities. They need the land back. They would not entertain any situation where the Superdrome remained in place.
Immediate Steps:
We created this GoFundMe to raise the money needed to purchase the track, dismantle, and store the track structure. We have purchased the track, and still need money to pay to dismantle, transport, and store the track until we have a site to rebuild. Additionally, we will need volunteers to help with the labor.

Next Steps:
We are also raising money to rebuild.  First, we will use the money for the purchase of the track, the costs of disassembling (tools & equipment), transportation & storage costs, and finally the rebuilding costs on at a new location. We are working on new locations, so stay tuned. The money will be managed by myself with guidance from the Superdrome Advisory Board.

I’m excited to announce that 2-time Olympian, Pan Am Games Champion, and Elite World Championship Medalist Carl Sundquist is coming to Texas to help with the Superdrome “deconstruction” on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. He is an excellent example of the passion of Trackies, and the importance of this project. He’s excited to come help, and even more excited about what the future holds for the Superdrome. Come out, introduce yourself, talk cycling, and help us prepare for a new Superdrome.

We have a limited window to dismantle the Superdrome and put it into storage. We'll begin on Tuesday, July 17th at 7am and work until we get it done. Come out when you can. We need people to volunteer as "shift managers". Recommended: wear boots or at least shoes, and not sandals. Work gloves and power drills with a #3 Phillips bit would also be very helpful.

The deal is done. We’ve bought the Superdrome. We can begin disassembly next week. We have already started the process of securing locations to rebuild. It’s no longer a hypothetical.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to those who took the leap of faith and donated without knowing if we’d get here. I am overwhelmed by the people that don’t live in DFW that contributed. Some had traveled to race here once. A few have never been on the Superdrome, and still contributed.

We still need your financial support, even more than before. Now we need to collect to rebuild. The more we raise, and the faster, the sooner we can rebuild. We lost the 2018 season, but there is still time to rebuild before winter training and the 2019 season.

Please keep sharing to reach those who may not have heard yet. Many are on vacation. Many are at Junior/Masters Track Nationals. We had many people willing to sign a petition back in December. We need that type of support now. Every dollar counts.

We will also need volunteers in the next few weeks to disassemble the track. We will begin organizing those volunteers now.

Thank you, again!

Just to give everyone an update of what where we are, and what the goal is.

The end goal is to reopen the Superdrome in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. I have had calls from 3 different cities wanting to move the Superdrome away from North Texas

The original goal of $30,000 was to fully fund every step of taking control of the Superdrome: purchasing the structure, acquiring the tools necessary to dismantle the structure, rental of boom lifts to move the structure pieces, and hiring tractor-trailers to relocate the structure. It’s very probable that we will be able to get some of these things loaned and donated to our cause, greatly reducing our costs. Some of these things have been offered to us, which is why we will need less than the full goal. Additionally, I have received word from a potential sponsor willing to match up to half. Therefore, the goal has been updated.

In speaking with Dale Hughes, the builder of the Superdrome, the current structure would be about $850,000 to replace new. This explains why the 3 cities have jumped to try and buy it out from under us.
