The Grace Tamayo Ulcerative Colitis Fund
After battling illness for weeks at home, Grace Tamayo, a young mother of 3, was taken to the ER where she was told her body was "toxic." Grace has been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) which is the result of an abnormal response by her body’s immune system where it is essentially attacking her body and concentrating on the colon. UC causes inflammation of the colon, ulcers, bleeding, mucous, extreme pain, nauseousness, weight fluctuation, fatigue, bone density loss, among other things. The disease is so debilitating that those afflicted are hospitalized about two times per year. There is no cure for UC only treatments.
In the past few months Grace's health has worsened. She's remained hospitalized and placed on numerous medications to help treat UC, some of which include Aminosalicylates, Corticosteroids, Antibiotics, and Biologic Therapies. These medications come with crippling price tags, well into the thousands. Grace has had multiple doctor’s visits, testings and procedures conducted, and endured several blood transfusions. And on August 26th, her UC caused her to have a life-threatening bowel perforation that led to emergency surgery and removal of her colon. She is currently still hospitalized and receiving ongoing treatment, medications, and therapies. In addition to UC, Grace also fights another autoimmune disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which is currently in remission.
Grace grew up in Brooklyn, NY but now resides in Palm Coast, FL with her husband Sev and their three children.
She is employed by Child Evangelism Fellowship of East Central Florida office where she works as the Administrative Assistant to help positively impact the lives of the children of Volusia, Flagler, and St. John's counties in Florida. In addition to working at CEF, Grace also donates her spare time and her talents to partner with, "Be That Family" where she makes "taggies" (small activity blankets) to be packed in backpacks for youngsters who have entered the Foster Care network. She also makes handmade quilts for children's beds that have been donated to missions in needy countries outside the U.S.
As you can imagine, this whole process has been not only physically and emotionally draining, but also financially draining. Grace's income is necessary to the family finances. The situation is critical due to all of the medical costs and the expense of missing work. The financial hardships will continue due to the procedures and medications Grace will have to be on to continue to treat her UC.
Grace has built her life on helping others and is now in need of some assistance herself. Any help you could give would be a blessing. No amount is too small.
