Friends, Family, Family of Friends, Friends of Family....
Welcome. And thanks for being here. We've come to a time in our lives where we desire to expand our pack with a (human) baby!
As you know the past 3 years have taken us on a journey we never imagined. In our first year of marriage we found ourselves driving a u-haul to the Pacific NW with promises of growth. Our original intent was vocational and academic growth, but Seattle delivered much beyond that. Our first year was a sweet time for us... looking back it was our foundation for what was to ensue. 6.12.2012 our world shifted with the first of what ended up being three cancer diagnoses in three years.
In the past years there have been many, many costs. Certainly emotional, but financially as well. One of the main topics in current research on the aftermath of young adult cancer is the toll it takes on young couple's
working to "build a beginning". That has felt true to us as we made the decision for Lindy to continue graduate school, and the costs of living in Seattle. There was the initial costs of the treatments & surgeries, but ironically the bulk of the costs has been in all of the ongoing care, much of which isn't covered by insurance.
One big bulk of that is fertility costs which began before Dean started chemo and have continued through recent assessment appointments for Lindy.
You may remember, this past June we took steps toward inquiring about our fertility options but that came to a halt with the discovery of sarcoma in Lindy's body. As time has passed and healing occured, our desire has only grown to bring a (human) baby into our little pack.
On a bad day we feel completely overwhelmed thinking about the costs and get stuck. On a good day we allow ourselves to dream & think creatively. We allow ourselves to imagine how a wide community could each pitch in a little to help us achieve the dream of a little tiny "pearson" person.
We have both needed to process the past years in our own ways and timing. We've arrived at a time where we've collectively landed in both emotional/physical health and desire. After several years of reacting and focusing on restoring our bodies, it has felt so healing to let ourselves look into the future & to imagine new growth as the next chapter of our story. That maybe, possibly, perhaps this could be. Though it feels scary to hope once again, we feel ready to risk.
Thanks in advance for any support you may be able to offer.
A few logistics:
-Funds will be allocated to a combonation of IUI/IVF/adoption fees to grow our family. For now, we are just focused on one healthy babe.
-We've already invested nearly $5,000 (out of pocket) in pre-screening, banking, planning and health check-ups just in fertility costs. We continue to set aside funds to put towards this, but the big bulk procedures are where we could use the help.
-Through much delibration we have made the decision to begin with at least an attempt for a biological child. We've talked to our medical providers about this possibility and they have encouraged us. Additionally, we've invested in extensive screening to assure us that Lindy's body is ready to be with child, and after many appointments, all in our medical team feel confident and supportive in this as our next route.
-We're envisioning this as a big, widespread (pre-baby) baby-shower of sorts. Instead of gifting upon or just before baby arrives, our need is a bit earlier in the game. Our committment is that if we are fortunate enough to have a child that we will seek to find ways to raise them in a minimalistic fashion (basic necessities for the first years), and our hope is to do that in the manner of borrowed, recycled and hand-me-downs as much as possible. We're excited for the challenge!
-We are working with Pacific NW Fertility where we were referred by Dean's oncologist in 2012.
Thanks again! Continued thoughts, prayers and encouragement will always be appreciated.
