Composing Together brings professional composers direclty into classrooms and libraries to collaborate with young people to create new music, empowering them with the knowledge that their ideas have meaning, value and the power to shape the future.

Please help us raise funds to support our 2017-2018 season, inspiring and challenging the next generation of artists, thinkers, citizens and problem solvers as we expand our school-based programs and library family concert series in underserved areas of Northern California.

Hi, Friends of Composing Together. It's time for the annual Composing Together report and once-a-year request for your support. We've done so much with your help in the past-over 2500 kids have worked together with our Teaching Composers to create and perform nearly 200 compositions since 2008. I hope you continue to see value in what we're doing.

Our "My Words, My Music" program is going full steam with a Poet in Residence and kids writing their own text and setting it to music with our Composers. You haven't heard anything until you hear, "Awful Waffle Falafel" by the Longfellow 7th Grade Band - an awesome combination of pre-teen joyfulness in yuck with some thoughtful musical choices to put their ideas across.

Nine classrooms are already scheduled in 2018 pending your support. We've also expanded "My Words, My Music" into a family concert program for libraries, performing in Berkeley, San Francisco, Vallejo, Petaluma and San Leandro with many more waiting.

Your support makes it happen. Please help if you can.

Hi, to our wonderful supporters!
Here's the latest from Composing Together. We've started our "My Words, My Music" program, combining poetry and music in spoken word compositions, partnering with Alan Bern, published poet and children's librarian at Berkeley Public Library. In addition to our regular school concerts and residencies, we're adding a library family concert program this year, too! If you have connections to libraries or librarians, please let me know. And, as always, any support you can provide goes to help kids learn about themselves and the world around them by creating music together.

Thanks, thanks, thanks to all the wonderful donors! The concert was excellent and exciting in every way. I will be sending you a link to a dropbox site where you can hear recordings of the music, although it won't give you the incredible experience of the outer space images in the planetarium, which was pretty mind-blowing. The ensemble will be going into Fantasy recording studio in early August to make a studio recording of "Music of the Universe", which will be available to you on request, too. Thank you all for making the concert a reality! We will be starting up Composing Together residencies in late August with 2 schools in Santa Cruz, followed by 3 Oakland schools in Sept/Nov. and Berkeley right after Christmas. Please stay in touch and watch us do our thing with kids and creativity!

YEAH!! We've matched the challenge grant from East Bay Fund for Artists. Thank you so very much, Donors. You made it happen.

We'll be leaving this GoFundMe site up as a convenient place to support our upcoming 2015-16 school projects: extended residencies in 3 Oakland Middle Schools along with some assembly concerts, 2 Berkeley Middle Schools, at least one San Francisco school, and collaborations with Santa Cruz's premiere chamber orchestra, Cadenza.

Support kids, creativity and new music through Composing Together!

I saw the "My Words, My Music" program at the San Francisco Library. After listening to children's stories read by a librarian and accompanying original compositions by the musicians, the children participated in creating a new whimsical poem and then added music to describe the words. The program was fun, educational and enjoyed by the children and parents alike. The musicians were excellent. A very inspiring experience for all.
