My name is Sophia Spies. I am 14 and live in Iowa. I was born with Galactosemia. A rare genetic disorder that means I can not have any kinds of dairy products because I do not have the genes to process dairy. I was very sick when I was born because I was given milk. I almost died till the doctors found it. Not a lot of doctors know about Galactosemia because it is so rare and there is not much information for it because of little funding for research.
Galactosemia causes many problems for me and for all people who have it. Like learning disabilities, speech problems, cataracts, tremers, premature ovarian failure, and growing problems.
So I am trying to raise money for research and to go to the Galactosemia Foundation Conference in Florida this year. Because they will have doctors, scientist, classes to teach people like me about our disorder, food I can actually eat, and it would just be really really cool to meet someone like me and make friends.
